Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, has thrown his weight behind his former captain, Mikel Obi, following his protest against his employers, which led to the termination of his contract in March.
Mikel voiced his concerns saying he did not feel comfortable playing football with the outbreak of the coronavirus in Europe after the Turkish Super Lig refused to suspend its league.
The club would go on to terminate the contract of the Nigerian after nine months with them.
In an interview with Teller Report, the Franco-German was asked to give his thoughts on the conduct of the former Chelsea midfielder, and he joined others to back the decision of the player.
He said, “It is a noble gesture, he was right to do it even if he finds himself without a club today. You can’t threaten the health of the players.
“Many people have supported Obi Mikel, not just in Africa. He could count on the solidarity of the football family, it is very important.”
Blues’ legend Didier Drogba backed the 32-year-old in the wake of his row with the Turkish club.
Mikel’s position on the issue was also supported by Galatasaray and Colombian striker Radamel Falcao as well as former national teammate Brown Ideye.
