Awoniyi scores first Bundesliga goal

Taiwo Awoniyi scored his first ever Bundesliga goal for Mainz who came from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw in a league clash at the RheinEnergieStadion on Sunday, The PUNCH reports.

The game was his first since December 2019 when he featured as a substitute in his side’s 2-1 loss to FC Augsburg.

A sixth minute goal from the penalty spot by Mark Uth and another from Florian Kainz after 19 minutes gave Koln a 2-0 lead into the interval.

Awoniyi came off the substitute’s bench for Dong-Won Ji in the 56th minute and reduced the deficit three minutes later.

The 22-year-old Nigerian scored with his second touch, guiding in Bote Baku’s cross in the 61st minute.

It was his seventh-ever goal attempt in a Bundesliga match.

Pierre Kunde levelled scored for Mainz in the 72nd minute after he finished off a superb solo effort to earn his side a share of the spoils.

Awoniyi, currently on loan at Mainz from Liverpool, is expected to make his eighth appearance when Mainz host RB Leipzig on Sunday.
